How far along are you?: 10 weeks
How big is baby?: the size of a prune or kumquat (those seem very random to me)
Maternity clothes?: not yet, but my pants are definitely tight even though I haven't gained any weight. I have tried some on and they are so comfortable, so I have a feeling I will be sporting some maternity pants soon.
Sleep?: Some nights are better than others
Best moment this week?: Seeing our little peanut! The events leading up to it were scary, but it was so exciting to see that he/she is still in there, moving around, and has a heartbeat!
Food cravings/aversions?: Dinner and evenings are the worst. Breakfast and lunch I can usually handle normal foods just fine. I don't have any cravings.
Gender?: 12 more weeks or so before we find out
Movement?: We saw some wiggling and waving on the ultrasound!
Belly button?: no change
Symptoms?: All day sickness (some days are better than others, and evenings seemed to be most challenging for me), lots of burping, tired, just all around feeling lazy lately :(
What do I miss?: having some energy
What I'm looking forward to this week?: being one week closer to 2nd trimester
Milestones?: This week's major developments: Though he's barely the size of a kumquat — a little over an inch or so long, crown to bottom — and weighs less than a quarter of an ounce, your baby has now completed the most critical portion of his development. This is the beginning of the so-called fetal period, a time when the tissues and organs in his body rapidly grow and mature.
He's swallowing fluid and kicking up a storm. Vital organs — including his kidneys, intestines, brain, and liver (now making red blood cells in place of the disappearing yolk sac) — are in place and starting to function, though they'll continue to develop throughout your pregnancy.
If you could take a peek inside your womb, you'd spot minute details, like tiny nails forming on fingers and toes (no more webbing) and peach-fuzz hair beginning to grow on tender skin.
In other developments: Your baby's limbs can bend now. His hands are flexed at the wrist and meet over his heart, and his feet may be long enough to meet in front of his body. The outline of his spine is clearly visible through translucent skin, and spinal nerves are beginning to stretch out from his spinal cord. Your baby's forehead temporarily bulges with his developing brain and sits very high on his head, which measures half the length of his body. From crown to rump, he's about 1 1/4 inches long. In the coming weeks, your baby will again double in size — to nearly 3 inches

We saw our little peanut!
Rick and I went for the ultrasound at the hospital today. I was pretty nervous, but Rick remained calm and optimistic.
As soon as we saw the little gummy bear on the screen, my heart skipped a beat. It was moving around and waving it's arms. We saw the heart beating too! Rick was able to see a lot more than I was because of the way the screen was angled.
The heartbeat was a healthy 182 bpm! The ultrasound tech wasn't able to talk to us about the images, but my doctor should be calling me this afternoon after she reviews the ultrasound.
I am assuming everything is fine since it was moving around and the heart was beating. Thank God! What a relief!
We didn't get any printed pictures and we weren't allowed to take photos or record it. Hopefully at our ultrasound on April 11 we will get some take home evidence.
We are so excited to have seen our precious little one. What an amazing blessing.

A bit of a scare
This morning we had a bit of a scare and ended up in the emergency room. After many tears, lots of bloodwork, an exam, and 5 hours in the ER, I was released. The doctor did not think I was having a miscarriage, but instructed me to call my doctor to set up an ultrasound first thing tomorrow morning.
The good news is we might get to see baby tomorrow! I am just praying that everything is ok and we are able to see and hear a strong, healthy heartbeat.

9 Weeks
How far along are you?: 9 weeks
How big is baby?: the size of a green olive or a grape
Maternity clothes?: not yet
Sleep?: I am tired all the time and having some crazy dreams, so I am up a lot at night.
Best moment this week?: Going to the dr, even though it was pretty uneventful
Food cravings/aversions?: I am still struggling with eating. The sickness got better for a couple days, then came back even worse. Nothing is appetizing and I can't seem to find anything I want to eat when I am hungry.
Gender?: We still have a long time before finding out.... 13 weeks
Movement?: way too early
Belly button?: no change
Symptoms?: All day sickness, crazy dreams, feel really sick if I get hungry, tired
What do I miss?: not feeling sick
What I'm looking forward to this week?: There really isn't anything in particular going on this week that I can think of.
Milestones?: Less than a month until I hit 2nd Trimester!
This week's major developments: Your new resident is nearly an inch long — about the size of a grape — and weighs just a fraction of an ounce. She's starting to look more and more human. Her essential body parts are accounted for, though they'll go through plenty of fine-tuning in the coming months. Other changes abound: Your baby's heart finishes dividing into four chambers, and the valves start to form — as do her tiny teeth. The embryonic "tail" is completely gone. Your baby's organs, muscles, and nerves are kicking into gear. The external sex organs are there but won't be distinguishable as male or female for another few weeks. Her eyes are fully formed, but her eyelids are fused shut and won't open until 27 weeks. She has tiny earlobes, and her mouth, nose, and nostrils are more distinct. The placenta is developed enough now to take over most of the critical job of producing hormones. Now that your baby's basic physiology is in place, she's poised for rapid weight gain.

Uneventful appointment
Yesterday afternoon was my first appointment with my OB, Dr. Carr. Rick came with me. I was really hoping for an ultrasound or some assurance that things were going well.
No such luck.
She kept asking if we had any questions, but we had very few. She said things seemed to be progressing as they should. My blood pressure was a little high, but I am pretty sure it had to do with dealing with Animal Control and being really upset about the whole dog situation (more on that later). And that was pretty much it. Nothing exciting.
My ultrasound is now scheduled for April 11 at 9:15am. That is a whole 20 days from now! It is going to be a long three weeks of waiting.
I guess we won't be sharing our news for at least three more weeks. We both want to make sure things are going well before we start telling people.
Ohhhh! I almost forgot! Dr. Carr says that she doesn't think there will be any problems with me going to Disney World at 33wks! Yippeee! I know Rick was very relieved to hear the news.
I spoke with Animal Control yesterday right before my appointment. He told me that the lady was going to have to get rid of her dog, but she indicated that she was going to get rid of her when the sheriff spoke with her on Thursday evening. She did not indicate that to me in our conversation on Sunday afternoon. Later in the conversation he said she had to euthanize the dog or she would be charged with owning a dangerous animal.
I got very upset because I cannot imagine being told I had to put Jacks to sleep. On one hand, I do not feel safe walking in our neighborhood with this dog there, but I just hate that he mentioned euthanization. I feel horrible and am really having a hard time dealing with the emotions.

A little better each day
Jacks is such a great dog. Poor little thing.
Each day he gets a little better - he moves a little more, eats a little more, doesn't seem quiet as bothered by his wounds. Since Thursday, his eyes have looked really sad. However, by last night, I started noticing that his eyes were looking happy again. I don't really know how else to describe it. To see some life back in his face makes me very happy.
It has been a long few days filled with lots of worry and concern. My heart breaks everytime I see his wounds. I can't stand thinking about what happened and what he went through. Part of me is very angry about what happened, but another part of me is very very thankful that it wasn't worse than it was.
I received a call from the owner of the other dog on Sunday evening. She asked how Jacks was doing and how much the vet bill was. She explained that her dog is socialized, but she thinks her dog sees small dogs as her toys. "She picked your dog up and shook him in her mouth like she does her stuffed animals." Ummm ok? Was that supposed to make me feel better? Anyway, she was a nice enough lady I guess. I explained that the vet told me we needed to contact Animal Control and I attempted to call her first but apparently the number provided to me was the wrong number.

My poor baby Jacks
It was an absolutely beautiful day today- 70 degrees and sunny! When I got home, I decided to take Jacks on a walk in the neighborhood. I asked Alli to come with me and we called our nice neighbor Mrs. Nye to come with us also.
We headed out to walk around the neighborhood. About 3/4 mile into the walk, a dog came down from a house up on the hill and ran across the street to where we were walking. Jacks was on his leash, the other dog obviously was not.
It sniffed at Jacks and then all the sudden started biting him. I couldn't get the dog off of Jacks. I was crying and screaming. The owner and her two kids came running down. I was trying to pry the dogs mouth open and the owner started pulling on the dog's collar. Finally he let go after biting Jacks on his ear and head, neck, back, back legs and rear end. I was pretty hysterical.
It was so horrible to hear Jacks crying and not be able to make the dog stop. I cry just thinking about it again.
Apparently one of the children opened the door and accidently let the dog out.
I rushed Jacks to the emergency vet. He has 3 large puncture wounds (one on his left side and two in his rear end area), a cut on his stomach, and a severely bruised rear right leg. They had to shave him and clean out his wounds. They sedated him and gave him lots of pain medicine. We have antibiotics and pain meds to continue giving him while he is at home.
I can’t even explain the pure terror of watching it happening, hearing Jacks cry, and not being able to stop the dog.
I am very very thankful that he is ok because that dog could have easily killed him.
The vet told me I needed to call animal control, so I made the initial report tonight and they will follow up with me tomorrow.
We have Jacks wrapped up in a towel because his wounds are weepy. He is half out of it and half anxious. My heart is aching. I just want him to be healthy and without pain. My poor baby.

8 weeks!
How far along are you?: 8 weeks
How big is baby?: the size of a raspberry
Maternity clothes?: not yet
Sleep?: I am tired all the time
Best moment this week?: Rick getting a new car
Food cravings/aversions?: nothing is appetizing. Meat is a little difficult for me to eat right now. I tend to get full a lot quicker. If I eat even a bite after I start feeling full, it starts getting ugly. Soda (caffeine free) tastes funny to me and I no longer have any desire to drink it.
Gender?: I wish I knew!
Movement?: way too early
Belly button?: no change
Symptoms?: I got dizzy this morning. Tired. Some nausea, but it has gotten much better with the B6 and unisom my doctor recommended. Lots of burping- gross.
What do I miss?: having energy
What I'm looking forward to this week?: My first appointment with Dr Carr on Monday! I am praying I will see/hear the heartbeat.
Milestones?: I feel like hitting 8 weeks is a big deal. I know every day that goes by is one day closer to being "in the clear" as far as complications or miscarriage. I am just very thankful.
This week's major developments: Webbed fingers and toes are poking out from your baby's hands and feet, his eyelids practically cover his eyes, breathing tubes extend from his throat to the branches of his developing lungs, and his "tail" is just about gone. In his brain, nerve cells are branching out to connect with one another, forming primitive neural pathways. You may be daydreaming about your baby as one sex or the other, but the external genitals still haven't developed enough to reveal whether you're having a boy or a girl. Either way, your baby — about the size of a kidney bean — is constantly moving and shifting, though you still can't feel it.

Rick's new baby...
for approximately 32 more weeks, until the real baby arrives, is a new 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe SE!
We have been discussing what to do about his car for a couple months since discovering the transmission is leaking and needed to be replaced. Monday we drove across the mountain to Harrisonburg to go to the dealership over there. We looked at the cars on the lot, Rick picked which color he liked best, and then we moved inside for some number crunching. After some back and forth, we finally came to an agreement and put down a deposit on a new car!
Rick went back to Harrisonburg on Tuesday after getting all the paperwork done and came home with his new car! It is really nice. I am a little jealous (well, maybe more than a little).
I haven't taken any pictures of it yet, but this is what it looks like:
Unfortunately, I am pretty sure our babymoon went out the window with the purchase of Rick's new car. So very sad.

From the inside looking out
What an absolutely beautiful weekend it was, looking out from my window. The sun was out, the air was warm (high 60s!), and I was in bed.... all.weekend.long.
It was a rough weekend for me. I felt pretty miserable, but even worse was my mood. Staying in bed when it was so nice outside made me really sad. I feel like I am missing out on life. I hate it. I cannot wait to start feeling better.
Rick and I tried to go out to dinner last night to get out of the house. Bad idea. I felt so incredibly sick and everything was bothering me - the sight of Rick's steak, the people sitting at the table behind us who seemed to be talking SO loudly, the waiter not putting a lemon in my water like I asked... I was ridiculous. I think it is just better for me to order take out or stay home.
I feel so bad for Rick. He is trying so hard to be supporting and try to help, but there really isn't anything he can do.
Most of my blog posts lately have been about how horrible I have been feeling... So I am going to come up with 5 positive things to talk about today.
1) I have the most wonderful husband! He is supportive, loving, helpful, caring, sweet, and compassionate. I could go on and on. I can't imagine life without him and I feel so very blessed to call him my husband.
2) Daylight Savings Time- The time changed yesterday. The first couple days are always a little rough, but I am so excited for spring and summer!
3) Disney World in September- We booked our return trip to Disney World last October. With gas prices going up by the second, I went ahead and bought our plane tickets last week. According to the nurse, as long as there are no complications, they allow pregnant women to fly up to 36 weeks. I will be 33-34 weeks when we go. Fingers crossed everything will be fine and we will still be able to go. We love Disney!
4) Only one more week until I go to the doctor! It seems like it has been so long. I am really looking forward to hopefully seeing the heartbeat and putting my mind at ease a little bit.
5) I thank God every day that I have a sticky little baby growing inside of me. What an amazing blessing!
ok... maybe 6 positive things for today. I need to add another one.
6) My dog Jacks. He is such a great little dog. All weekend long he cuddled with me. I am pretty sure he can tell I am not feeling well, and he tries to take good care of me. He makes me happy. :)
Happy Monday!

7 weeks
How far along are you?: 7 weeks
How big is baby?: the size of a blueberry
Maternity clothes?: no
Sleep?: I feel like I can't get enough
Best moment this week?: the nursery being painted
Food cravings/aversions?: aversions to pretty much everything
Gender?: way too early.
Movement?: way too early
Belly button?: still an innie
Symptoms?: nauseous every waking minute, gagging and heaving
What do I miss?: not feeling sick
What I'm looking forward to this week?: hopefully finding something that makes me feel better
Milestones?: Every day I am thankful that this baby is still sticking. Stick, baby, Stick!
This week's major developments: The big news this week: Hands and feet are emerging from developing arms and legs — although they look more like paddles at this point than the tiny, pudgy extremities you're daydreaming about holding and tickling. Technically, your baby is still considered an embryo and has something of a small tail, which is an extension of her tailbone. The tail will disappear within a few weeks, but that's the only thing getting smaller. Your baby has doubled in size since last week and now measures half an inch long, about the size of a blueberry.
If you could see inside your womb, you'd spot eyelid folds partially covering her peepers, which already have some color, as well as the tip of her nose and tiny veins beneath parchment-thin skin. Both hemispheres of your baby's brain are growing, and her liver is churning out red blood cells until her bone marrow forms and takes over this role. She also has an appendix and a pancreas, which will eventually produce the hormone insulin to aid in digestion. A loop in your baby's growing intestines is bulging into her umbilical cord, which now has distinct blood vessels to carry oxygen and nutrients to and from her tiny body.

Pretty miserable
Morning (All Day) Sickness is rough. It hit me hard this weekend, and continues in full force. I am not sure how I am going to make it 6+ more weeks. Yikes!
I haven't found anything that makes me feel better yet. I tried sea bands, but they haven't helped. I went to Whole Foods to purchase some ginger candies. I am not a huge fan of ginger, but I do think the candies helped some. The problem is that the thought of eating the candies is less than appetizing, so I am struggling with keeping them in my mouth.
Food that I was craving, like fruit, now makes me sick to think about. I don't want anything to drink except water, but it has to be ice cold. Carbs, unfortunately, seem to be the only thing that I can stand eating.
Rick has been wonderful. He has been so sweet and helpful. I don't know what I would do without him.
On Sunday night, we went to dinner with Rick's parents for Rick’s birthday. They met us at our house, so we showed Pat the new paint. She made a comment about the yellow "office" being the perfect color for a nursery. Oops! I responded quickly that all the other rooms in our house are green and blue, so we wanted to try something different. I am not sure if she bought it.
It turned out to be quite the disaster because it started snowing like a blizzard. We slowly (and I mean very slowly) made it across the mountain to Harrisonburg. We ate at Texas Roadhouse, which is one of Rick's favorites. When we left the restaurant, it was still snowing. We drove a ways to the base of the mountain. We saw blue lights up ahead. As we approached, we realized they had closed the mountain because of the snow. We turned around and headed back towards Harrisonburg, across to Waynesboro, over Afton Mountain, then all the way through Charlottesville and Ruckersville to get home. It was a LONG trip.
What made the trip almost unbearable for me was the smells. Rick brought left over ribs in the car and I thought I might not make it. I kept throwing up in my mouth, despite rolling down the window every once in a while to get some fresh air. I finally had to ask them to put the ribs in the trunk, and tried to just play it off that I hate pork and can’t stand the smell.
Pat quickly said "Skye, are you sure you aren't going to need that yellow room sooner than you think?" I am pretty sure my mother in law knows something is going on.

All Day Sickness
I am not sure why they call it morning sickness, because it definitely isn't isolated to just the morning.
Whatever it is... I have it. It isn't too bad yet. I have some friends who unfortunately have been REALLY REALLY sick, so I am still counting my blessings. So far I have just been nauseous, with some stuff coming up my throat (sorry, I know it is gross) but no throwing up yet.
I have noticed that I tend to feel better when I eat, even if I don't feel like eating. And carbs are my friend.
I am looking forward to going home and taking a nap.

6 Weeks
How far along are you?: 6 weeks
How big is baby?: the size of a sweet pea
Maternity clothes?: no
Sleep?: I could sleep all day
Best moment this week?: being able to wish Rick a happy birthday from baby
Food cravings/aversions?: none
Gender?: way too early.
Movement?: way too early
Belly button?: still an innie
Symptoms?: tired, some indigestion, constipation (sorry, TMI)
What do I miss?: Diet Dr Pepper
What I'm looking forward to this week?: We are having the nursery painted, the crown molding in all the upstairs bedrooms painted/finished, the french doors in the nursery painted, and the master bath painted. I am really looking forward to it being done. The nursery will be a really light yellow.
Milestones?: hitting 6 wks without any real morning sickness. I am trying to enjoy it while I can since I know it could come any minute.
This week's major developments: The nose, mouth, and ears that you'll spend so much time kissing in eight months are beginning to take shape. If you could see into your uterus, you'd find an oversize head and dark spots where your baby's eyes and nostrils are starting to form. His emerging ears are marked by small depressions on the sides of the head, and his arms and legs by protruding buds. His heart is beating about 100 to 160 times a minute — almost twice as fast as yours — and blood is beginning to course through his body. His intestines are developing, and the bud of tissue that will give rise to his lungs has appeared. His pituitary gland is forming, as are the rest of his brain, muscles, and bones. Right now, your baby is a quarter of an inch long, about the size of a lentil.

Happy Birthday to Rick!
Rick's birthday was yesterday, March 1.
We decided to have a little trip to get away and relax. We left Sunday afternoon and headed down to Virginia Beach. Jacks came along with us.
Sunday night we went out to a seafood restaurant on the water called Watermans. They had Tollhouse Cookie Pie, but it was not nearly as good as the one at The Biltmore here in Charlottesville.
Monday it was warm (70s) but very windy. We ate breakfast at the hotel, then took a mid morning nap. After we woke up, we headed down to the beach with Jacks for a walk. Jacks LOVES the beach. He loves to chase the water as it recedes back into the ocean, try to catch the birds, and run back and forth in the sand. Since it was so windy, the sand was blowing and it stung when it hit us. We moved up to the boardwalk half way through our walk.
We had a late lunch at an Italian place and then headed to the mall to walk around for a bit. Rick was thrilled to see a Disney Store. I went into my first maternity store, but quickly left when I felt overwhelmed and anxious. Luckily, I do not need maternity clothes yet.
Monday night we decided to go to Captain George's seafood restaurant. I do not eat seafood, but Rick loves it. He has been wanting to eat there for a while, but every time we plan on going, something happens and he doesn't end up eating there. It was raining, but we jumped in the car and headed out.
About 2 blocks from our hotel, we witnessed an accident. Being the good claim representative that I am, I had to stop and wait for the police to arrive so I could tell them what I saw. Unfortunately, it took about 45 mins for the police to actually talk to me and take my information. By the time we arrived at Captain George's, the buffet was about to close. I felt horrible that I ruined Rick's dinner that he was looking forward to. We picked up some pizza instead and headed back to the hotel.
Tuesday morning we had breakfast at the hotel and then I took yet another morning nap (are you sensing a theme here?) while Rick watched some Sports Center. We got ready and headed back to home.
Once we got back to town, we unloaded everything and then went into town to see the last UVA basketball game of the season. UVA beat NC State 69-58! It was a fun game to watch, especially after UVA has struggled this season.
This year I not only gave Rick a birthday card from Jacks (his little buddy), but from baby too!
I had a great time just hanging out with Rick (and taking lots of naps). he is such an amazing husband!
Happy Birthday Rick! I love you <3
